Sir Ken Robinson points out that schools and learning environments are similar to the inevitable life of organisms in Death Valley. “If the conditions are right, if people are given the freedom to grow, and encouragement in the right circumstances, growth is inevitable.” Great schools grow because conditions are good. Culture and new technologies can become a vital part of not only students’ lives, but also parents’ lives. There is immense talent locked up in the education systems and the pressure and pain it takes to restrain it will be greater than the pain of pushing it to erupt and flourish. Ideas, such as, MOOCs, the flipped classroom model, and other “sources of disruptions”, fit into this concept of pushing to new levels because those ideas are innovations. They allow us to take technology and bring it to a whole new level. Online classes, Khan Academy, flipped classrooms, etc., all inspire and fuel new ways to incorporate technology and bring about creativity.
If we desire to increase knowledge, accelerate learning, and ignite innovation, we must build upon tools that we already have and enhance their accessibility for everyone. Once everyone is on the same page with technology and it’s variety of uses, then we can use the different applications, websites, and engines to incorporate our goals. We must disrupt our futuristic thinking and push to extend the boundaries of learning to a whole new level. In this day and age, we thrive on progress and innovative thinkers. Without innovations and creativity, we would be at a standstill; unable to build upon our thinking current.
